Deputy President William Ruto dragged Interior CS Fred Matiang'i's aide in his response to the late Kipyegon Kenei's father, John Chesang, who vowed to revive the murder case that has stalled for over a year.
The DP, during an interview on Citizen TV on Thursday, April 15, claimed that several incidents where police officers commit suicide have been in the spotlight, with the latest being that of Matiangi's bodyguard, Police Constable Hudson Wakise.
Ruto, however, refuted that he was hinting at Kenei committing suicide rather than being assassinated or brutally murdered, and urged the late sergeant's family to allow relevant agencies to investigate the case.
"These matters happen. I saw the other day an officer killing his wife and turning the gun on himself. A lot of issues and incidences occur and police do not have to create unnecessary drama and politics but investigate the case.Citizen TV Director of Strategy and Innovation Linus Kaikai (left) in an interview with Deputy President William Ruto (right) at Karen, Nairobi on Thursday, April 15, 2021
"Am not suggesting that Kenei committed suicide. I am putting all cards on the table. What do I tell the family? I have been forthright with them. I even recently learnt that Kenei is related to a Cabinet Secretary who is one of my closest friends," Ruto defended.
Kenei's father, John Chesang, further claimed that Ruto had abandoned the family despite making several promises and assurances. Speaking to KTN News on Sunday, April 11, Chesang alleged that the DP had gone silent over the matter whereas the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was dragging the case.
He argued that Ruto had selfish interests in the case and kept blaming the DCI, alleged that he (Ruto) was the assassin’s target but Kenei ended up being the sacrificial lamb and was opposed to the DCI and US-based Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) leading the case.
"Since then, no action has been taken and we have not communicated in any form whatsoever. We, the family, were expecting to see him (Ruto) because he had claimed that he would have been the target instead of Kenei. What action has the DP taken?" Chesang wondered.
Ruto, hit back, alleging that the family were under duress and coercion by political cabals with undisclosed motives. He reiterated that Kenei was a dedicated young man who worked in his office and an impression was created that some of the DP's employees had a hand in the case.
"When the murder was reported, we saw how the DCI paraded CCTV footage (alleged to be evidence). I told the IG (Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai) and his office that they must get to the bottom of the case, whether it was murder or assassination,"
"People are trying to sell theories to the family for political reasons. I want to tell the family that I, like them and all other Kenyans, want the case solved. I also believe in justice and fairness and that no life should be lost in the same manner as Kenei's," the DP responded.Director of Criminal Investigation George Kinoti on Thursday, March 5, demonstrates how Sergent Kipyegon Kenei was murderedSimon KiraguKenyans.co.kegun murder assassin suicide
