John Matiang'i, the brother of Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, on Thursday, April 29, announced his decision to step down as the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) national treasurer.

Matiang'i, who describes himself as a fearless defender of teachers rights, stated that he wanted more time to focus on his studies at the University of Nairobi.

Some of the functions of KNUT include; bringing and uniting teachers of all grades and qualifications in Kenya and providing a forum for co-operation, fighting for improved terms and conditions of service for teachers and protecting teachers interests among others.

Matiang'i has been one of the leaders who were orchestrating Wilson Sossion's ouster at the union.

The officials had accused Sossion of paralysing operations of KNUT saying that there were many underlying matters affecting teachers which needed urgent address.

The soft-spoken leader joined KNUT in 2008 in the position of Branch Executive Secretary. After six years, he became the National Treasurer of the union, a position which he has held to date.

Previously, he worked as a teacher under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for 14 years, from 1990-2000.

He is a graduate of the University of Nairobi where he studied Kiswahili and Geography after which he joined the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, for a Masters degree in Education Administration in 2010-2013.

He completed his education with a PhD at the University of Nairobi where he became a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Administration.

Last year, Matiang'i was gazetted by the Treasury CS Ukur Yattani to serve as a member of the Public Service Superannuation Fund Board of Trustees.

He is mandated to provide retirement benefits to persons in the public service.
