A Nairobi driver, on Monday, May 10, counted losses after his car landed in a ditch at Nyayo Roundabout following heavy flooding in the city.
Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed the car headfirst in the ditch that was dug at Bunyala Road which had been previously closed off by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
It is reported that the driver could not tell the existence of the ditch due to heavy flooding that had rendered a number of roads across the city impassable.
The trench was cut across the road on Uhuru Highway.
The incident comes barely two weeks after KeNHA cordoned off the section of Uhuru Highway to motorists to allow for the completion of the Nairobi Expressway that is under construction.
In early April, the place was closed for 20 days before being extended for an additional 21 days on Friday, April 30.
With the construction and closure of the section, traffic was redirected to flow from Nyayo Stadium roundabout to Lusaka road, Workshop Road and onto Bunyala Road before proceeding to Uhuru Highway.
"Motorists are kindly advised to use alternative routes. We apologise for any inconveniences that may be caused as we endeavor to provide an efficient, safe and reliable road network," the roads agency stated at the time.
It is still not clear how the car wandered off into the closed section and landed into the trench.
Motorists using Uhuru Highway and Mombasa Road have had to contend with traffic with reduced lanes due to the construction of the Expressway.
The situation has been worsened by the ongoing heavy rains that have caused flooding along Mombasa road exposing Nairobi's poor drainage system in the process.
The construction of the Nairobi Expressway aggravated an average rainfall into floods due to the disruption of the waterways and drainage systems along the road.
The most affected sections, at the time, included the area around the Bellevue/South B Junction, Imara Daima/City Cabanas and Nyayo Roundabout.
300 families have so far been left homeless since rains began around mid-March.
