Kakamega County police officers on Tuesday afternoon, May 18 gunned down five robbers after a high-speed chase on the Kakamega-Kisumu highway.
Reports indicate that the police officers were in pursuit of the robbers who were a notorious gang known for rampant criminal activities in the county.
The incident was confirmed by Kakamega South Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Chesire who noted that the robbers engaged fire with the police who were forced to retaliate.
“The police challenged them to surrender but instead the (robbers) fired at them. All robbers were armed,” Chesire said.
Among the items recovered in the Toyota Belta used by the robbers were - two pistols, a police uniform, several rounds of ammunition, several mobile phones, a radio device, and a bank cheque.
Area residents had crowded at the scene to witness the bodies of the thugs who, at the time of publishing, were still scattered on the road.
Chesire also cautioned criminal gangs within the county, noting that their days are numbered.
Robbery cases have been rampant within various counties as police officers institute efforts in order to curb the vice.
This has caused great concerns among Kenyans as a section of them have urged the government to enforce security means in order to assure their safety.
A recent report released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in 2020, titled Economic Survey revealed that robbery cases within the country rose by an 8.6 percent margin during the first quarter of 2020 as compared to the same period in 2019.
The report also entailed that Nairobi, Kiambu, Meru, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kisii, Machakos, and Murang'a were among the counties where robbery cases had recorded a high figure.
