The body of Elijah Obuong, one of the Kitengela Four victims was exhumed and stolen from his grave on Wednesday night, June 2.

Kisumu County Police Commander Samuel Anampiu confirmed the incident stating that a group of seven people dug the grave, retrieved his body and buried an empty coffin.

They filled the grave with soil and fled away with his body in a hearse.

Obuong was buried at his aunt's place on May 13, after being found tortured and murdered in a case currently under investigation.

Police boss Anampiu suspected that a family member who allegedly opposed the burial of Obong at his aunt's place was behind the exhumation.

“We are tracking down a close family member, whom we believe organised the illegal exhumation.

“Our officers from Koru Police station are dealing with this matter that is still under investigation," Anampiu tentatively stated.

Other reports alleged that the victim's mother led the exhumation party and wrapped the body in a polythene bag before speeding away.

An autopsy conducted at the Murang'a County Referral Hospital morgue detailed that Obuong died of strangulation. The other three friends who disappeared were Jack Ochieng, Benjamin Imbai and Brian Odour.

Imbai's body was later found at General Kago Funeral Home in Thika. Jack Ochieng's family disowned a third body which was believed to be his. Police are still searching for Ochieng and Oduor’s bodies.

The four had been accused of being members of a criminal gang that worked together with rogue police officers.

Prior to Obuong's body being exhumed, his mother admitted that he was engaged with individuals of questionable character and that the family was surprised to find out that head ties with alleged criminals.
