Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) boss Mohammed Badi has announced that he will launch 12 hospitals within the city in two weeks.

While speaking before the Senate Health Committee on Sunday, June 13, Badi indicated that the construction of the facilities was already complete and awaiting approval by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He noted that the 12 hospitals were part of the 24 whose construction was commissioned to improve access to healthcare in lower income neighbourhoods.

“A total of 12 of the new hospitals are ready for commissioning. We are hoping in the next two weeks His Excellency the President will give us guidance on opening them,” stated Badi.

The NMS boss had appeared before the committee to answer questions touching on the utilization of Covid-19 funds.

Badi further noted that the remaining eight hospitals were to be operational by the end of June but delayed arose from the process of acquiring land in informal settlements.

So far, four Level 2 hospitals have already been commissioned and operating. They include Uthiru-Muthua Level 3 Hospital, Kiamaiko, Kayole-Soweto, and Ushirika in Dandora.

The other is a health centre at Green Park terminus in Nairobi.

“We resolved the issues of land and we are now on course to have all the hospitals completed by July,” noted Badi.

In February, NMS had promised that President Uhuru would be commissioning two hospitals every weekend all hospitals will be commissioned.

Of the 24 hospitals, 19 facilities would be built from the ground up at a cost of Ksh70 million each. The remaining five used a total of Ksh300 million to be refurbished.

Badi had explained that all 84 wards in Nairobi will have at least a hospital that will bring health services closer to them.

The facilities that will be launched are in; Soweto kayole, Uthiru, Kiamiko, Ushirika, Viwandani, Majengo, Mathare, Korogocho, Kawangware, Gitare, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Mukuru kwa Reuben, Kibera and Githurai 44.

The building of the new facilities is in line with the Universal Health Care (UHC) goals, which Kenya hopes to attain by 2022. UHC seeks to ensure that citizens have easy access to affordable, yet quality healthcare.
