The capital has seen notable transformation since Nairobi County transferred key functions to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) back in February.

The four functions include Health services, Transport services, Public Works, Utilities and Ancillary services and Government Planning and Development.

Under the stewardship of Director-General Mohammed Badi, NMS has transformed Nairobi to make it more appealing to residents and its visitors.

Nairobi CBD Walkways

NMS has been able to convert some parking spaces into walkways and bicycle lanes, in an effort of increasing non-motorised accessibility in the CBD. The most notable sections include Kenyatta Avenue, Moi Avenue, past Serena Hotel at the Integrity Centre junction and Wabera Street.

With Ksh28 billion pumped to the agency, some roads have been recarpeted with the City Hall Way round-about and Kirinyaga Road redone using an asphalt concrete overlay.

Eng. Michael Ochieng said that the Non –Motorized Transport is aimed at decongesting the CBD to reduce traffic snarl-ups.

Green Park Terminus

The Green Park terminus that is expected to be complete in January 2021 is set to revolutionise transport in Nairobi and decongest the Central Business District (CBD).

The terminus will adopt a similar design to the Greyhound Terminus in New York, United States as revealed by Badi in September.

The terminus will see PSVs plying Ngong Road and Lang'ata Road (Kawangware, Kikuyu, Kibera, Lang'ata, Rongai, Kiserian) will terminate at Green Park.

NMS is building more termini including, the Fig Tree Terminus, a terminus at the junction of Bunyala and Workshop Road, the Muthurwa Terminus and the new Desai and Park Road terminus.

NMS Hospitals

NMS is also set to revamp the health sector through the construction and rehabilitation of 24 new hospitals by the end of January 2021.

During his Jamhuri Day speech, President Uhuru Kenyatta revealed that the Ksh2 billion project will see the bed capacity of Nairobi County-run hospitals increase by 280.

The proposed Ksh400 million upgrade of the stalled Mathare-Korogocho hospital to a Level-Five health facility is part of the health revamp in the county by NMS.

Most of the hospitals will benefit Kenyans in vulnerable communities in  Uthiru, Kibera and Mukuru Kwa Reuben in a bid to increase access to health services.

Roads in Nairobi

In 2020 NMS embarked on the recarpeting and rehabilitation of the roads in different parts of the city.

Areas that are set to benefit from the road rehabilitation and construction include Westlands, Dagoretti North, Dagoretti South, Lang'ata, Kibra, Roysambu, Kasarani, Ruaraka, Embakasi South, Embakasi North, Embakasi Central, Embakasi East, Embakasi West, Makadara, Kamukunji, Starehe and Mathare.

NMS stated in October that it would be working around the clock, starting with Moi Avenue in the CBD before moving to city estates.

Rehabilitation of the roads has been fast-tracked following the launch of the Kangundo Road Asphalt Plant which is able to produce enough material to recarpet up to 3km a day.

Water Projects

NMS launched a number of water projects around the city in a bid to improve sanitisation mostly in the slum areas to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The agency drilled boreholes and installed steel water tanks as part of ongoing water interventions in the informal settlements in Nairobi.

While marking NMS’s 100 days in office, President Uhuru Kenyatta flagged off 22 water bowsers and five ambulances to be used in water and health projects in informal settlements.

The projects came at a time when Nairobi residents were facing with acute water shortage with normal operations of two major water treatment plants, Ng’ethu and Sasumua, in the city affected by heavy rains that were pounding the country in May.

Garbage Collection

Despite the hiccups, NMS has managed to streamline the collection of garbage within the city that has led to most estates being cleaned.

NMS also rehabilitated 21 garbage collection trucks which had been grounded for a while and hence have increased its fleet to enhance the waste collection.

The Service is also in the process of establishing the  Material Recovery Facilities in all the seventeen (17) sub-counties which will support the separation of wastes and hence reduce open dumping of waste thus stopping pollution of our environment.
