A contractor is counting losses after his two tractors and excavator were set ablaze by thugs while parked at a construction site.

In the incident that occurred in Banyole area of Mandera County, a police reservist, who was part of the three that were guarding the property, was killed in the attack.

The other two guards sustained injuries in the incident that is believed to have been orchestrated by Al Shabaab operatives.

Confirming the incident, Northeastern Police boss Rono Bunei revealed that the reservists were fighting off the attackers when one of them was killed.

The three were guarding the area where Banyole dam was being constructed.

Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed a completely damaged driver's area of the excavator while other tractors were in various stages of destruction.

Witnesses at the event noted that the attackers stormed the venue on the morning of Wednesday, June 23, set the property ablaze as the workers scampered for safety.

This comes two days after the militia abducted a truck driver and his turnboy who were working on a road in Mandera.

Mandera South Deputy County Commissioner Nyamboga Mounda confirmed that the militia attacked the construction site on the Elwak-Falama road.

The truck driver was identified as Ali Mohamed and the turn boy as Kerow Adan Abdi.

“There was an incident where a tipper belonging to a local contractor working on a road was set ablaze and the driver and his turn boy are missing,” Mounda told Nation.

Instances of insecurity in North Eastern region have been on the rise in recent months.
