Deputy President William Ruto amused residents of Kilifi County on Saturday, July 17, recalling a phone conversation he had with Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa in 2017.

Ruto recalled making a call to the Malindi MP over a “witches and wizards” comment she had made in a speech in Chonyi, Kilifi County, during the 2017 election cycle.

The MP had asked Chonyi witches to bewitch all voters who would come out to vote for Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime in the repeat elections of 2017.

Jumwa urged any Chonyi resident who was capable of using black magic to use it to impede the elections from taking place. Jumwa wanted the elections not to be held without any reforms being made, and felt that Uhuru’s government was undemocratic.

“I am calling on all witches to come out and exercise their black magic powers. If possible, let’s use the strongest charm. Let anyone who comes to vote be attacked by bees to stop them from voting” announced Jumwa.

The Deputy President on recalling Aisha’s remarks had a light moment with the residents of Chonyi, Kilifi, narrating how he called the MP to ask her about her comments despite them being in different political camps.

‘Unajua huyu mama Aisha nilimuona kwa runinga akiwa kwa mkutano hapa Chonyi. Sasa Aisha akasema ‘sasa nyinyi Wachonyi, si hapa ndio tuko na wale waganga wakali kabisa? Sasa tunataka nyinyi mroge wale watu waanguke ndio sisi tupite’ (You see, I watched Aisha Jumwa on television in 2017 when she made remarks about sending witches to bewitch voters so that we couldn’t win the 2017 elections.)”

“Sasa jioni, hata ingawa tuko mirengo tofauti nikampigia Aisha nikamwabia sasa wewe unatutafutia sisi watu ya kuturoga?" (Later on that evening, I made a call to Aisha asking her why she wanted us bewitched by Chonyi witches) recalled the DP as he burst into laughter over the memory.

The Deputy President was attending the funeral service of Bishop Dr. George Chipa and his younger brother Adam Chipa in Chonyi, Kilifi South, Kilifi County.

He mourned the death of the bishop, saying in part, “Bishop Dr. George Mwangome Chipa was a true faith leader whose sermons were authentic, targeted, rich and thought-provoking.
