The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday, July 27, through their official social media pages, responded to claims made by Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi over a graft case involving the recovery of Ksh43 million.
Kingi had initially decried that the slow pace of the EACC investigation was hindering the county from carrying out some of its functions.
In a detailed response, EACC stated that it was currently investigating suspicious payments of approximately Ksh51 million made to unknown suppliers by the county government of Kilifi.
EACC added that it had been lawfully investigating the corrupt deal and obtained an injunction allowing them to seize some of the assets from Kilifi County Government pending the conclusion of the case.
“EACC has been discharging its lawful mandate to investigate corruption and economic crime and to recover assets lost by the County Government of Kilifi through corruption,” he said.
The anti-corruption watchdog added that there are many investigations being conducted by the EACC in connection with Kilifi County Government.
“The execution of EACC’s statutory mandate should not be construed to infer interference with any remedial action initiated by Kilifi County to recover that which is lost through corruption,” EACC stated.
Appearing before the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee in July 2020, Kingi urged the EACC to fast-track the case as it had stalled some of the county's functions.
“The commission went to court and obtained a stay order. All the civil cases that we had filed in court to recover the money were all affected and now there is nothing we can do,” Kingi said.
Kingi wanted the officials implicated in the graft case to be charged to clear the county from the EACC radar.
