A coach based in the United States of America Vincent Kwarula has committed to paying a year's worth of rent for a homeless street mother of eight children.
Speaking to Nation, Kwarula noted that he met Ann Wanjiru while visiting his family in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).
Touched by the distraught look on the faces of the infants who approached him in order to beg for a few coins, Kwarula decided to change their lives.
"It is the sight of the infant crying that made me take interest. He was probably hungry," Kwarula stated.
Kwarula, who is visiting the country for a few days, decided to take Wanjiru and her children off the streets and take them to a house in Githurai where he paid a year's rent.
Astonished by the act of goodwill, Wanjiru couldn't hold back her tears as she narrated her ordeal to the media.
"I have been in the streets for five months now. It has not been an easy venture even though I make between Ksh300 and Ksh500 in a day, or at times nothing. I'm consistently harassed by the county government askaris; they beat us up, demand or steal our money.
"Some street children abuse drugs in the presence of my children," she added.
Kwarula also entailed that his philanthropic nature is attributed to the fact that he grew up in Nairobi's Kawangware slums before venturing into sports.
Kwarula is a former Harambee stars player who played in the 1990s. He is synonymous with being a part of the team that almost qualified for the 1998 World Cup.
After playing football for a couple of years, he retired at the age of 30 and relocated to the USA in order to pursue a bachelor's degree in Business Administration at Southern Connecticut State University and a Master's degree of the same.
The former player is currently a coach at a football academy based in New York.
