An orphaned student in Bonchari Constituency in Kisii County on Wednesday, August 4, attempted suicide over lack of school fees to join Form One.
Janet Kerubo Otwori, who was set to join Kereri Girls High school in Kisii, drank pesticide after she was denied admission to the school.
Her guardian, Joseph Onduso was alerted by an intense scream from the house Kerubo consumed the chemical that resulted in excruciating stomach pain.
Accompanied by neighbours, they rushed to the house in Riamontinga village and rescued Kerubo and rushed her to a nearby hospital.
Kerubo excelled in her KCPE exams having scored 305 marks at Riamontinga D.E.B primary school.
Janet on Monday, August 2, trekked to Kereri Girls High School dressed in civilian slippers and in her primary school uniform hoping to be admitted.
However, the watchmen sent her away as she did not meet the admission requirements.
This prompted her to attempt suicide out of desperation as all her friends already joined their respective schools.
“When I found Janet writhing in pain with a bottle of pesticide beside her, I asked her why she was trying to take away her own life, and she stated that all her peers were joining from one, yet she had no one to support her,” stated Joseph.
Janet comes from a troubled family as she previously lost both parents in 2013 due to political differences.
The mother was supporting former Bonchari MP Zebedeo Opore and her father was affiliated to Charles Onyancha.
Her dad Tom Mbuya Otwori, had forced his wife Teresa Kwamboka Mbuya to support Onyancha, something Kerubo's mother did not accept and continuously attended Opore's rallies.
As a result, the husband got furious and hacked her to death.
Neighbours got angry, attacked and killed Tom as well, leaving Janet and her three siblings orphans.
Joseph is now appealing to well-wishers to come to Janet’s rescue and help her start her secondary education.
