Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen clashed with his Siaya counterpart James Orengo over the attacks on ODM leader Raila Odinga and the now-famous quote on revolutions eating their own children.

Murkomen while contributing to a petition on the amendment of the criminal offences on Thursday, August 8, accused Raila of supporting the punitive precedence of arresting leaders on Fridays.

This did not go well with ODM senators whos stood up to admonish Murkomen for his comments. Orengo however, shot down his colleague's comments and accused him of going off-topic with his attacks on the former Prime Minister.

Orengo reminded Murkmen that he (Murkomen) had supported the Security Laws Amendment Bill which Jubilee senators supported overwhelmingly while the opposition warned of its consequences.

The Senior Counsel noted that Murkomen was decrying the treatment of Jubilee leaders who have fallen out with the party and their claims that they are being targeted and arrested on Fridays. Orengo reminded his colleague that he had failed to listen to the opposition on the dangers of the law,

The former Senate Majority Leader, however, maintained he had no apologies to make for supporting the amendment and claimed that the Siaya Senator was holding the knife that has been used to stab him by the state.

"Why is Orengo jittery when we tell him he is on the side that is currently in government when we know they dine with the president, they plan with the president and they are the ones announcing government projects?" the vocal senator posed.

"The only thing I said is that for the short time you are enjoying the lodges of government do not forget that tomorrow may come. The same thing Orengo was trying to tell me the other time that governments eat their own people... Orengo should have added that he would be the one carrying the knife because he's holding the knife today," he added.

This is a change of tune from his remarks in August 2020 when Murkomen agreed with Orengo on the iconic quote on governments eating its own children. In January 2017, Senator Orengo made the statement during a debate on Election Laws (Amendment) Act 2016.

“Sometimes revolutions eat their own children… governments eat their own people. This government is going to punish you more than they will punish me, I am telling you. In another one year you’ll be crying in my office to come and represent you," Orengo stated.

These remarks were made in the senate during a discussion pertaining to election law issues that the majority of Senate leaders were in support of from the Jubilee Party.
