Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has revealed intrigues behind his decision to vie for the gubernatorial post and a special role former President Mwai Kibaki played in it.

In an interview with Nation published on Sunday, August 29, Mutua noted that he received millions of money from the former Head of State in a briefcase.

It all began when Mutua resigned from his role as the government spokesperson to vie for the gubernatorial seat he currently occupies.

He noted that he went to Kibaki and to inform him about the decision and to his surprise, the former President would be the first to make a formal contribution to his campaign.

Mutua revealed that Kibaki was happy with his decision even though some of his seniors did not see the gubernatorial position as all that powerful.

"I resigned and went to brief President Kibaki about my running for governor. He was very happy. He stood and gave me a hug.

"After we finished our meeting at Harambee House the next day, he stood and gave me a briefcase full of money," stated Mutua.

In a strange turn of events, however, he lost Ksh10 million after his campaign office was broken into just days after receiving the generous donation.

He became broke instantly and at some point, he could not pay some of his staff members and that is when he decide to reach out to the then Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.

"He asked me to go to Dar es Salaam. Around the same time, he was renaming Bagamoyo Road to Mwai Kibaki Road. Lilian came with me to the meeting.

"Later that day, he got someone to send me Ksh10 million in US dollars to help me with the last push of campaigns. I don't think I would have managed to pay agents and win were it not for that money from President Kikwete," he added.

Regarding his break up from Lilian Ng'ang'a, Mutua noted that the two had reached an amicable solution and that it was up to the two of them to determine the terms of their break-up.

He noted that President Daniel Moi had ruled Kenya for many years without a First Lady and that he would let fate determine what happens.

Mutua has expressed interest to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in the upcoming 2022 General Election.
