Residents of Tulwet village in Solyot, Bomet County woke up to a rude shock after a form four student committed suicide under unclear circumstances.
The body of the 20-year-old Mengwet Secondary School student was found dangling inside his house in the morning of Monday, August 30, by his parents.
According to Solyot assistant chief, Willy Kirui, who confirmed the incident, the student left behind a note to his parents revealing that he had been battling depression.
“He left a note on the table saying his parents were not the source of his problems. They had on several occasions tried to find a solution to his depression but little was achieved," the chief stated.
He also stated that the student was to report to school on the fateful day after the half term break.
The body was transferred to Kapkatet Hospital Morgue awaiting an autopsy even as detectives carry on with investigations into the suicide.
The suicide comes in the backdrop of a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raising concerns over the high number of suicide cases in the country.
Police data report revealed that at least 483 Kenyans committed suicide between March and June this year.
The youngest person reported to have committed suicide during the period was nine years, while the oldest was 76 years.
The report compiled by the Department of Operations at DCI between March and June names Central Kenya as the leading region in the number of suicides. 181 suicide cases were reported in the region during the period.
Rift Valley is second with 68 suicide cases followed by Nyanza (67), Nairobi (63), Eastern (57), Western (29), Coast (14), and North Eastern (3).
