Police have raised alarm after it emerged that 21 men in Nyeri County have died by suicide since June. This was revealed on Thursday, August 19, by Nyeri town county police commander Adiel Nyange.

The Nyeri Town police boss noted that they were alarmed by the increase in the number of suicides among men and they had set out to establish the cause.

Speaking to the media, Nyange confirmed that the county reported thirty suicide cases and 21 were male while 9 were female.

Nyange stated that police had rolled out an exercise to engage men in the county to gather data on what is ailing them and why the suicide rates have increased drastically.

"As a police force, we are concerned by this trend in fact we have embarked on a survey on why men are killing themselves in this county at a high rate we are doing this through a questionnaire which where we are interrogating them," Nyange explained.

The Nyeri County police boss added that once they establish why men are dying by suicide in large numbers they will rope in the relevant agencies to help the affected people.

He also noted that the county had an increase in the number of gender-based violence cases and defilement cases that are reportedly done by close relatives.

"As a community, we are alarmed by high cases of defilement involving relatives whom such children look upon to protect them from sex pests, this must be reversed in fact our gender-based violence centre is working round the clock to correct this anomaly," he stated.

A suicide case was reported in the county on August 5, where a lecturer who also served as the Deputy Principal at Kagumo Teachers' College, Nyeri hanged himself after sneaking out of Mathari Consolata hospital.

The man died by suicide while on treatment for ingested poison. According to Nyeri police boss Paul Kuria, Cyrus Ndirangu committed suicide by hanging himself using the hospital cloth line moments after being rushed to the facility.

Kuria also pointed out that Ndirangu had ingested poison in his house on Wednesday evening, August 4.

The police boss affirmed that officers had launched investigations in order to establish under what circumstances Ndirangu died.
