BBC Award Winning Podcaster Namulanta Kombo: BBC World Service

Namulanta Kombo, a Kenyan mom won the first international British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Podcasts Award following its launch this year.

The competition  saw over 1,000 entries submitted from South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. It was open to those in the mentioned countries who were non-professionals.

Kombo is a development worker and the winning is encouragement to her peers. Her winning podcast was a dedication to her daughter with the title To My Daughter.

The podcast will become a 15 part series story on her letters to her daughter. The competition came as a coincidence when she was writing a letter to her daughter and gathering stories for her.

“I think I won because this was inspired by me having my own child, and I feel that I put that sentiment, that need for her and that want for her into my submission and into the thought process of what I would like it to look like.

"So I think that played a major factor; it’s so personal to me, and in the same breath, I feel like it can support and help so many women across the world," the 38-year-old mom told Citizen Digital.

Her passion for children preceded the podcast award - having spent nine years in the development sector assisting the government in monitoring policy work relating to children.

Additionally, she works with the children through a play centre that she uses to encourage play work learning.

According to the BBC, most of the entries were witty, fun and creative but at the end To My Daughter stories took home the award.

Kombo will see her podcast become part of the BBC World Service program where her story will be streamed across the world.

She will have access to the BBC in-house production team where they have produced 13 award-winning global podcasts.

Some of the award-winning  podcasts carried out by the production team include Minutes to the Moon, About the Apollo Space Missions, and Death in Ice Valley.
