Ann Mweru, a mother of four from Kesses, Uasin Gishu County, is a true representation of Kenyans' resilient spirit.

In pursuit of her dream to become a nurse, the 34 year old woman has sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams thrice, and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations twice.

The mother of four in her aspiration to become a nurse, first wrote her KCPE exam in the year 2002 scoring, 286 marks.

“My father could not afford school fees to see me join secondary school, and being the 7th child, he said that I was a grown up and that I should start fending for myself,” she narrated.

In 2005, she decided to get married before reaching the age of 18 years, the legally set consent age.

According to UNICEF, 23% of Kenyan girls are married before their 18th birthday and 4% are married before the age of 15.

In her narration, she says that she had hoped the marriage would better her life, only to make it more unbearable.

Mweru would later sit her second KCPE exam in pursuit of a good score to secure her secondary school education but performed dismally. She, however, wrote her third examination in the year 2014 and secured a slot at Chirchir Secondary School.

Through neighbours and family contributions, the ambitious mother joined secondary school in 2015 and finished in 2018.

Her marriage of 13 years would collapse in the same year she wrote her KCSE exam due to financial difficulties.

Mweru says that her family and friends abandoned her after she failed to register a good score in the exam. Her D+ score, however, did not discourage her.

A year later she would sit her second KCSE exam in which she registered an impressive C+, securing a slot in Moi University to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree.

She, however, says that her dream is to pursue nursing at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), but financial difficulties have been a major hindrance.

“My dream is to join the Kenya Medical Training College which makes me happy, but I cannot be able to meet the financial requirements. If I don't manage, hopefully when one of my children do nursing, I will be happy,” she said.

Her mother called on well wishers to help see Mweru off to KMTC to pursue her career.
