A Chinese national was on Thursday, September 2, manhandled and chased away from Adlife Plaza in Kilimani estate.

Media reports indicated that the man, whose name was not yet known by the time of publishing, was forcefully ejected after he tried to get into the building without a face mask and defied calls to put it on.

More than five guards landed on the man who resisted vacating the building and dragged him out. All this time, a fellow Chinese national unsuccessfully tried to help him.

It is not clear whether the man was arrested or not for contravening the Ministry of Health Covid-19 rules and regulations.

In 2020, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai directed police officers to arrest and fine Ksh20,000 those found without face masks in public spaces.

"Being in public without a mask attracts a fine of Sh20,000. However, all officers are to enforce this within the law and no one is allowed to use excessive force while implementing this directive.

"In case of any proof, share with my office, IAU [Internal Affairs Unit] or IPOA [Independent Policing Oversight Authority] for action," Mutyambai stated.

The Ministry of Health has continued to advise Kenyans to follow the measures by wearing masks, practising social distance and washing hands.

It is not the first time a Chinese national is being caught on the wrong side of the law in Kenya.

In 2020, a man was captured on video being whipped by a Chinese boss at Chez Wou Restaurant in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.

Simon Osieko, 22, disclosed that the boss had a special cane that he kept in his office for caning workers that arrived late for work.

Following the case, the Chinese national was ordered to pay a Kenyan youth Ksh3.07 million by the Employment and Labour Relations Court.
