Interior ministry officials disclosed more details on why Deputy President, William Ruto's security detail was re-organised in a closed-door session with Members of Parliament on Wednesday, September 1.

In the meeting, the officials told MPs that the DP allegedly misused officers attached to him by donating them to some of his allies who had their detail withdrawn.

The Interior Ministry told the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security that the DP donated some of his security detail to a Coastal region parliamentarian, who is facing murder charges, and a legislator from Rift Valley, who has been charged with hate speech. The two legislators had their security detail withdrawn.

The DP allegedly donated four security officers from his pool, assigning two to each of the legislators.

The Interior Ministry told the MPs that the move to re-organise the DP's security detail was informed by the misuse and abuse of the same by the country's second in command.

Appearing before the National Assembly's committee, Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, explained that the Inspector General of Police withdrew officers from the politicians to avoid putting the them (officers) in conflict.

"You cannot get officers and tell them to go and commit a crime or to accompany the leaders as they commit the crimes," Matiang'i told the MPs.

A total of 77 GSU officers were withdrawn from the DP's residence and replaced with 26 from the Government Buildings Unit (GBU) who are drawn from the Administrative Police Service.

Explaining the move, the CS noted that the DP's office is accorded the highest number of security officers drawn from the GSU, APs, and other formations - with a total of 257 officers deployed to guard him and his property.

He added that the DP had the highest number of security compared to all Kenyan Vice President's in the history of the Country.

“Contrary to the allegations made and in view of the tabled evidence, H.E. the Deputy President is the most guarded in the history of the country in comparison with previous equivalent office holders,” Matiang'i stated.
