Kenya's Recce Squad and the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) emerged top in an international shooting competition held in the country.

ATPU and Recce Squad emerged first and second position overall respectively in the International Defence Pistol Association (IDPA) African championship.

The ATPU Director, Martin Otieno, officially opened the championship on September 4 at the Kirigiti shooting range. The championship made its debut in Kenya and it attracted shooters from Africa and across the world.

The competition was further classified into divisions including Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP), Service Stock Pistol (SSP) and Pistol Carbine Caliber (PCC), while tiers were categorized as Masters, Experts, Sharp Shooters, Marksman and Novice.

Kenyan shooters were drawn from the KDF, Kenya Police, Prison, among other security agencies and civilians.

ATPU, which is a unit attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) emerged best overall, scooping 9 trophies while the General Service Unit (GSU), affiliated to Recce Squad, emerged second, bagging six trophies.

Kenya Prisons and Kenya Police came in third and fourth respectively, with the latter bagging four and the former three trophies. The Kenya Police emerged top in the ESP Novice award.

Individually, DCI-ATPU lead instructor Sammy Onyango successfully defended his title as the overall ESP Master. Chief Inspector Alvince Osura won the PCC Marksman category while Police Constable (PC) Mike Kiptanui came in second in the ESP Expert tier.

Notably, John Asanju was named the ESP sharpshooter winner as PC Aden Barrow took runners-up. Other winners include James Ekaale, Julius Mwaniki and Joel Leskamosi.

While congratulating the winning teams, Otieno complimented the rest of the participating teams for displaying a spirit of sportsmanship.

Other countries such as Spain and Switzerland among other select European nations squared it out.
