Two police officers were arrested on Wednesday, September 8, by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on suspicion that they were involved in an alleged robbery incident in Dagoretti estate, Nairobi County.

According to a police report, two men dressed in plainclothes stormed a shop in Dagoretti and identified themselves as police officers based at the Spring Valley police station.

The report says the two later brandished their firearms at the shop owner, threatening to shoot him.

An altercation ensued as the officers attempted to handcuff the owner, but he raised an alarm and alerted nearby residents.

"The officers attempted to handcuff him, but he resisted and raised alarm, attracting curious members of the public who responded in their numbers and rescued him."

"Cornered, the officers opted to escape by firing one round in the air to scare away the irate mob," part of the report states.

In the melee, one of the officers lost his official communication gadget in an attempt to flee from the irate mob who sought to dispense justice.

"Luckily, police officers on patrol based at Kikuyu, rushed to the scene of the incident and managed to dissuade the mob and recover the crucial police communication gadget," the report stated.

Upon concluding preliminary investigations, it was discovered that the pocket phone belonged to one of the officers.

The two detectives were arrested, disarmed, and taken to Gigiri police station and are now awaiting arraignment. The shop owner, who sustained injuries on his left hand and stomach was rushed to Nile hospital for medical attention.

The majority of criminal cases involving rogue police officers have increased in the recent past, causing concern among Kenyans who raise questions on the conduct of the men in uniform who are meant to institute justice within the country.
