A Kiambu boda boda rider has joined the highly contested gubernatorial race in a bid to unseat Governor James Nyoro.

Eric Mungai, known as ‘Muturi wa Nduthi’, made his move to contest for the Kiambu gubernatorial seat, ten months to the August 2022 General Election saying it is time for the youth to take the leadership mantle.

The 34-year-old father of two from Ruiru township in Kiambu is also a vocal youth leader.

Muturi will be facing off with the incumbent, James Nyoro, and former Governors William Kabogo and Ferdinand Waititu, both who are eyeing the county's top seat.

He will also face off with Senator Kimani Wa Matangi who has expressed interest in the seat.

In a recent interview, Muturi mentioned that he is confident he will emerge victorious to succeed Nyoro.

“If people call Nyoro, Wa Matangi and Kabogo formidable, then I am extra-formidable myself,” Muturi remarked.

The ambitious boda boda rider has noted that Kiambu county is tired of seeing the same faces over and over again, adding that it is time for a younger, energetic team to lead.

"It's time for the youth to lead, make the changes they have been agitating for. I have sacrificed myself to be on the frontline and I look forward to a smooth journey of transforming our county," he noted.

Speaking to the media, Muturi narrated that one of the big names in Kiambu approached him and offered him money in order to drop his bid. He, however, declined the offer saying he will be on the ballot come August 9, 2022.

As part of his manifesto, Muturi says that he is determined to boost Kiambu’s health infrastructure, which will see people from all parts of the country seek treatment in the county.

“I want the rest of the country to be coming to Kiambu for the best treatment. The influx of patients and their family members will increase the demand for hotel accommodation, and this will in turn translate to health tourism,” Muturi mentioned.

Muturi is a degree holder but rides a boda boda to earn a living.
