Kenyan BBC journalists will enjoy a seven per cent salary increment following an agreement between the media house and the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) in a recently signed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

An internal memo signed by Head of East Africa Languages - BBC World Service, Rachael Akidi, indicated that all eligible staff in Kenya will receive the increment effective August 1, 2021.

BBC and KUJ agreed to reconvene in June 2022 to agree the pay offer for the second year of the CBA, which will commence on August 1, 2022.

"We will now start to update pay for the September payroll and will backdate any increases to 1 August," reads the memo in part.

Due to the adverse economic effects caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in the Country, journalists in a number of local media stations were subjected to a salary cut in 2020.

BBC did not initiate the same but missed a pay increment during the year.
