Police drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) were called in to hunt for prisoners who escaped from the Nanyuki GK Prison.

According to police documents, 14 prisoners made the daring escape on Friday night, September 24, and a search for them was mounted.

Officers from a nearby station heard gunshots emanating from the Nanyuki prison and responded promptly leading to the recapture of eight prisoners.

The officers on Saturday, September 25 were still searching for six others who are still at large.

A report by the police also indicates that some of the prisoners who escaped had been convicted of murder and others were serving time for robbery with violence.

According to police officers, the prisoners cut through the doors using a hacksaw before jumping over the perimeter wall.

“Officers from the station, DCI and CIPU were mobilised and immediately rushed to the scene map ref 853583 about 3km west of the station,” the police report stated.

“They established that 14 prisoners charged with capital offences had escaped from the said prison,” it continued.

This comes barely two months after eight prisoners went missing after they staged a daring escape from Vihiga Prison on the morning of Friday, July 23, 2021.

A police report indicated that a total of nine prisoners escaped from prison in the early morning incident during the breakfast period.

One of the officers who were on duty disclosed that he was sandwiched against a wall while he had gone to open the cell occupied by the prisoners.

The police mounted a search and managed to re-arrest one of the suspects, Maurice Taabu.
