A postmortem conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed the cause of the death of Mary Hongo, Felix Orinda’s (DJ Evolve) mother.
DJ Evolve’s mother passed on after collapsing at their home in Lucky Summer, Nairobi on Wednesday, September 22. She was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A family spokesperson who addressed the media on Sunday, September 25, disclosed that Hongo succumbed after a swelling occurred in her heart that caused the organ to rupture.
Kennedy Ochieng, the family spokesperson, disclosed that the DJ's mother died of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
This is a bulge or swelling in the aorta. The condition can be fatal if not spotted earlier. It can get complicated over time and could burst (rupture), causing life-threatening bleeding.
“The aorta ballooned and burst,” Ochieng added.
A distraught John Orinda, the husband, also recalled the last moments with his wife.
“I was with her on the morning of the tragic day. She cooked me breakfast before I left to run some errands. She went back to sleep as I departed.
“I bid her goodbye and promised to see her later in the day. My heart broke when I received a call and learnt that she had collapsed,” he recalled.
The family appealed for privacy to mourn their mother. Plans for the burial are underway.
Hongo was the sole caretaker of her son, DJ Evolve, who was incapacitated after being shot in the neck at a popular club in Nairobi in 2020.
“Since that time, everything stopped on my side because I couldn’t do anything and my child is in this condition," she told the press after Evolve was released.
Friends, family, leaders and Kenyans sent their tributes and condolences to the family.
“Mum you were a mother to me, and a friend. As a family, we are deeply saddened by your loss. You are forever loved and treasured. To my friend Felix and your family. May God grant you peace, strength and comfort to go through this difficult moment in your lives.
“Mum You always told us to be strong no matter how big the storm is and to always put God first. Rest in peace till we meet again,” Embakasi East MP Babu Owino eulogised.
