Newly appointed Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) Director-General Ezra Chiloba has unveiled plans to ensure proper communications infrastructure in order to guarantee peaceful campaigns during the election period.

Chiloba notes his new role is equally tasking as his previous role as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chief Executive Officer.

"I aspire to build a regulatory that is responsive to the challenges and opportunities that the 21st century brings forth, given the ever-changing ICT space," he stated.

"The idea is that Kenya is at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution.”

Chiloba noted the critical role the Authority plays during the election period and affirmed his commitment to ensuring a peaceful election process.

He noted that this would be through following the stipulated guidelines as well incorporating up-to-date technology in a bid to prevent any fraudulent infiltration of the systems or mishaps.

The former IEBC CEO's recent appointment came under fire from a section of political figures who termed it as a 'convenient appointment' less than one year to the 2022 General Election.

"The tactics of repression are chilling but what I found fascinating is how they use lobbying/PR firms to project an image of democracy, development, stability and good governance," Former IEBC commissioner, Roselyn Akombe, who served with Chiloba, stated.

Other politicians pointed out that the appointment served as evidence that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga would be dealt a raw blow in the coming election.

The CA-K board announced that Chiloba would begin his duties at the authority immediately.

In the released statement, the authority stated that Chiloba is a policy consultant and principle partner with Chil and Kemp consultancy and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
