The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, has broken his silence over the raging debate over the leaked financial documents dubbed the Pandora Papers.
Odinga, who spoke on Wednesday, October 5, with a local vernacular radio station, said that it is prudent that investigations on the monies stashed in offshore accounts be conducted and a report made public.
Raila, however, stated that there was nothing wrong with holding an offshore account, but insisted that there is a need for the holders of the said accounts to make them public.
He further said that the accounts should also be checked regularly to ensure that they are not used to facilitate illegal cash transfers or for holding proceeds of corruption.
"I don't think there is anything wrong with having offshore accounts if you can explain how you opened it. I don't have such accounts but they shouldn't be a way of hiding corruption money," he stated.
Coming to the defence of President Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila said that like any other Kenyan, he was also waiting for the Head of State to divulge more information on the leaked papers.
President Kenyatta on Monday, October 4, responded to the report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) that linked his family to offshore accounts holding billions of shillings in tax havens.
Uhuru assured the country and the world at large that he will issue a detailed response once he jets back into the country from a state tour in Barbados.
The leaked documents indicated that a foundation called Varies, established in 2003 was owned by the Kenyattas and it named Mama Ngina Kenyatta and Uhuru as the first and second benefactors respectively.
The President did not address the reports' claims on the Kenyatta family wealth, only saying he would "respond comprehensively" on returning from a State visit to the Americas.
