  • Lupita Nyong'o, on Wednesday, October 20, joined fellow Kenyans in observing the Mashujaa Day celebrations, while honoring fallen Athlete Agnes Tirop.

She took to her Twitter handle to laud Agnes for her achievements noting that her death was tragic and senseless.

Lupita joins a fraternity of notable figures who took to their social media platforms to offer their heartfelt tributes to the slain athlete, who was found stabbed to death at her home in Iten.

"Just months ago, we celebrated Agnes as she represented Kenya at the Olympics. Now, we tragically mourn her utterly senseless death," the celebrated actress stated in her tweet.

"Sending my deep condolences, love and strength to her loved ones," she continued in her statement.

Kenyan athletes, Julius Yego and Eunice Sum, led tributes to their fellow country woman decribing her as a great talent.

Ibrahim Rotich, who is the prime suspect in the murder, was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa County on Thursday, October 14.

Recent developments in the case confirm that detectives found a confession letter allegedly left by Rotich.

Post mortem results conducted at the Iten County Referral Hospital (ICRH) mortuary, on Tuesday, October 19, revealed that Tirop died as a result of injuries caused by stab wounds on the neck.

Tirop, who participated in the 5000m race at the Tokyo Olympics, came in fourth after Sifan Hassan, Hellen Obiri and Gudaf Tsegay clinched the first, second and third position respectively.

Tirop is set to be laid to rest on Saturday, October 23, at her parents home in Iten.

Her killing has sparked public outcry owing to a spike in violent crimes against women in Kenya, with the recent Ndichu Twins scuffle where two women were assaulted in Nairobi.
