At the age of 22, all Lily Murgor wished for was a job opportunity. Her search led her to Eldoret Town in 2012, where she got an opportunity to work as a waitress at one of the nightclubs in the ever-busy town.

Her fortunes would, however, change two years later after unfortunate incidents during her night shifts.

During an interview with an international media house, Murgor revealed that she had to quit her job after several incidents of ridicule from some of the customers. She revealed that she feared for her life because of the disorderly customers who would often engage in brawls.

She went ahead to narrate that she got fed up after one of the customers confronted her after failing to pay for their bills, also adding that she was earning peanuts from the job.

“There is too much work with little pay. You work the whole night but at the end of the month you end up being paid about Ksh6,000. Also, the waitress is required to pay for drinks that some customers left without paying for,” Murgor stated.

In 2014, Murgor decided to quit and move in with her sister. A move she stated was life-changing

While staying at her sister's place, Murgor discovered that she had a hidden talent in athletics. She shared that she would join her sister in her morning runs.

Her newly discovered talent would later lead her to marathon events organized in the Rift Valley region. Murgor stated that after some skillful displays on the track, she was applauded by event organisers with some of them approaching her for future events.

It was at that point that she decided to solicit the help of her uncle, who gave her tips on how to become better.

“In 2015 I turned a leaf in my life and started afresh. My uncle has a training camp, he allowed me to train there, that’s how I became serious with my training,” she disclosed.

A big break would, however, knock on her door after she was picked to represent Kenya at a Marathon event in China.

Murgor's great streak of wins would continue at the international arena, with Murgor bagging silver at the Nantong Half Marathon. She added that she could not believe her achievement.

“2019 was a great year, that’s when I took part in several athletic championships. I also traveled to China. It was unbelievable. I had not pictured myself going international,” she disclosed.

Despite her remarkable life story, she hopes to represent Kenya at bigger events. She added that she was training hard with the aim of getting selected for the Berlin Marathon which is scheduled for September 25, 2022.

“What motivates me is that I feel like I will make it. I am an optimistic person and that’s what keeps me. I see a bright future,” she expressed.
