“The owner was contacted, and he confirmed that the vehicle was missing from where he had parked it on Thursday night,” reads an excerpt from the report.

Events began unfolding at around 3am when the suspects were asked to halt their vehicle on the Mwiki - Githurai Road, but defied the orders.

Alarmed, police officers went after them and a subsequent exchange of gunfire followed. Officers recovered a homemade pistol but did not find any identification documents.

The bodies of the trio were moved to the City Mortuary.

Ruiru Sub County Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO), Justus Ombati, stated that investigations into the matter had been launched.

The incident came just hours after law enforcement officers from Homa Bay County shot at a driver who evaded multiple roadblocks.

The officers believed that the motorist was smuggling goods from the neighbouring country of Uganda.

The driver was able to vanish into a thicket and a man hunt has been launched.

He added that officers were looking for one of the suspects who was still at large.
