A bus ferrying tens of youth was intercepted at Tana River Bridge in Tana River Sub County on Saturday, October 20.

The youth, who were traveling from Kilifi County, were on their way to register as voters in Ijara Constituency, Garissa, when they were nabbed.

Galole Member of Parliament, Said Hiribae, raised an alarm after he was contacted and tipped off on the matter by elders in his Constituency.

The legislator pointed an accusing finger to his Ijara counterparts for trafficking people to register as voters in the County.

He added that two other buses ferrying passengers had arrived in the Constituency the previous weeks.

The youth, who are being held at Garsen Police Station, lamented that life had become difficult, leaving them with no option other than survive using such means.

"We do not support the politicians who are trafficking voters but we are just trying to survive because we are unemployed," one of the youth stated.

Politicians have been devising ways and means to get more youth to get listed as voters ahead of the August 9, 2022 General Election.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that it would embark on a 30-day nationwide voter registration exercise starting October 4, 2021.

IEBC targets between six and seven million new voters in the drive.

The commission will include six more constituencies in its diaspora list among them South Sudan, US, United Kingdom, Canada, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

IEBC maintained that the next year's election will be held on August 9, despite some of the politician's calls to postpone it.
