Police in Kilimani on Sunday, October 31, issued a statement following a viral photo of a child stranded outside a locked house.
Alongside the photo of the stranded child was a caption claiming that the child was locked out of the house after the mother, who had allegedly been arrested by the police officers who demanded Ksh30,000 for her release.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the officer commanding Kilimani Police Station (OCS), Muturi Mbogo, confirmed that the child's mother, Gertrude Munyasa was under custody at the station.
Mbogo further explained that Munyasa had been arrested from a house in Gobles Estate, Kilimani, belonging to an Egyptian national. She was wanted in relation to the disappearance of foreign currency totalling to about Ksh140,000.
"She was the main suspect after USD550 (Ksh61,160) and EUR 550(Ksh70,664) went missing from the house," he stated.
The police boss added that Munyasa, who was in the apartment housekeeping duties, was the main suspect since she was the only one who had access to the residence.
The OCS further revealed that the mother had left not one but two children in the safe hands of her neighbour in Muthangari - poking holes into the theory that the child had spent two nights in the cold.
Mbogo claimed that a blogger had stormed the police station on October 30, demanding the release of the lady.
In his post, the man who shared the photo claimed that the police had rejected his offer to pay a Ksh10,000 bail and instead demanded Ksh30,000. The OCS admitted to the claim but blamed it on his attitude.
"He came here demanding her arrest and was very rude to the police officers," he stated.
The city cop stated that they were in the process of finalising the suspect's release on a Ksh10,000 cash bail. He further stated that the matter was still under investigation by the authorities.
