Pastor Deya Freed on Ksh10 Million Cash Bail

Controversial televangelist Gilbert Deya was released on Ksh10 million cash bail on Tuesday by High Court judge Luka Kimaru.

Deya is facing five counts of stealing five children, all under 14 years, between 2002 and 2004, at Mountain View Estate, Nairobi.

In his ruling, Justice Kimaru maintained that strict conditions should be set so the accused does not abscond.

"The accused has a history of absconding and maligning the courts. He should follow terms to make sure he attends court," Kimaru ruled.

Notably, the case will be mentioned on May 29 for confirmation of whether Deya paid the cash bail or bond.

The controversial preacher was deported to Kenya from the United Kingdom to face child theft charges in 2017.

Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi directed that Deya be released on Ksh1 Million bond with a surety of Ksh2 Million.

Deya was to report at the Muthaiga Police Station every week as well as deposit his travel documents in court.

Bishop Deya has been at the Kamiti Maximum Prison since August 4, the day he was extradited from the UK and charged with the offence of child theft.

While in UK, Kenyan authorities had issued a warrant of arrest against him and Deya lost the extradition proceedings in a London court but appealed against the judgment at a High Court in that country.

His wife Mary Deya was arrested and charged in 2008 with 10 counts of similar offences before being handed a three-year jail term.
