A bus ferrying 28 students was on Thursday, November 28, involved in an accident along the Webuye - Bungoma Road.
The bus from Christ The King Primary School was heading to Bungoma from Webuye when it collided with a motorcycle.
According to a police report, the motorcycle was on the wrong lane at the time of the accident.
"The motorcycle abruptly turned right without due care and as a result, the vehicle hit the motorcycle and lost control landing in a ditch on the left side,” reads an excerpt of the report.
Following the accident, the motorcyclist died on the spot while the pillion passenger sustained injuries and was rushed to the Bungoma Referral Hospital for treatment.
All the students and their driver escaped with minor injuries. They were rushed to Bungoma West Hospital for treatment.
The deceased's body was taken to Bungoma County Referral Hospital Mortuary.
At the same time, the wreckage of the motorbike was towed to Bungoma police station.
According to statistics by NTSA released in September 2021, cases of road accidents in 2021 have risen compared to a similar period last year.
The survey indicated that fatalities had increased by 25 per cent as of September 20, 2021.
The accidents were attributed to reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, drunk walking, drunk riding, failure to use helmets among other issues.
NTSA urged road users to follow all the traffic rules and regulations in order to tame the rising number of accidents in the country.
