Scores have been injured following a grisly road accident along Thika Road on Tuesday evening, November 2.
In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, a truck rammed into a 14-seater public service vehicle, pushing it onto the road-rail in the middle of the dual carriage highway.
The accident happened at the Juja weighbridge, near the Kenyatta Road junction.
Eyewitnesses stated that the truck driver lost control and rammed into the matatu. They further revealed that occupants of the matatu had sustained injuries from the carnage.
The accident has led to heavy traffic in the busy highway - with motorists being advised to use alternative routes or avoid the road if possible.
A police officer who arrived at the scene stated that those who were injured have been rushed to hospitals in Juja. He however stated that they are yet to verify the cause of the accident.
“Those injured have been rushed to the nearest hospital even as we dig to ascertain how the accident occurred,” he stated.
The matatu belonging to the Chania matatu sacco was on its way from Thika to Nairobi.
The accident adds on to the number of accidents on the super-highway this week. In the early morning hours of November 1, a Toyota Prado overturned at clayworks area, causing a traffic snarl up.
Accoding to a report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road accidents have increased by 25 percent in 2021 compared to a similar period last year.
NTSA accidents were attributed to reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving and failure to use protective gear such as helmets.
