Betty Maina, a board member at Athi Water Works Development Agency, was forced to explain her source of wealth after photos of a house she has constructed for her parents went viral.
The Athi Water Works Board member said she wanted to honour her parents by building them a house of their dreams rather than buying herself expensive vehicles.
She went on to explain that she worked for politicians such as Murang'a Woman Representative, Sabina Chege, and took a loan to do facilitate the construction of the house.
Maina also revealed that she has a big farm project at home that her parents manage and it has been instrumental in helping her raise part of the funds for the construction.
"For the haters and those talking negative things, learn and discover my journey. Hon Sabina Wanjiru wa Chege gave me loans that she deducted from my salary when I was her employee," she stated.
"I started quail farming that failed, I started buying clothes from Uganda and selling to my friends. I bought my first greenhouse when I was barely 24 years. I have invested heavily in my community and the less advantaged and surely, God is not mean not to repay."
Maina further castigated her critics and noted that if the house her parents previously lived in was posted online, the same naysayers would be calling her off for living lavishly while her parents lived like paupers. She opined that people would accuse her of neglecting her parents.
"I will tell you if the old house for my parents had been living in was posted online, haters would have castigated me and said how much I have neglected my parents. I have no limits for my dad and mum.
"All my friends will tell you that I fondly talk of my parents and I visit them in the village weekly. Go seek blessings from your parents before hating," she said.
Maina also explained how her life in public service and helping the needy opened doors for her. She noted that her friends in the political circles turned out in big numbers to support her during the house opening and dedication.
She explained that the politicians showed up for her because she has also supported them in their respective constituencies to serve the less fortunate.
"My friend and my brother Hon Gideon Keter met my parents before they met any of my friends. My parents refer to him as a son, just the same way they refer to Hon Martha Wangari as a daughter.
"I assist these politicians to serve in their respective constituencies because service knows no boundaries. Hon Silvanus Osoro, Hon Nduati Ngugi, Hon Mugambi Gichuki among others will tell you how much I support their work as they serve. Service to humanity is service to God. God rewards all the speakers who described me as a selfless giver. And yes, over 10 Churches have PA systems courtesy of me," Maina stated.
The house became the talk of the town after nominated Senator, Isaac Ngugi, posted it online. Kenyans took screenshots that circulated on various channels as they questioned the source of Maina's wealth.
