Cabinet Secretary without Portfolio and Jubilee Party Secretary General, Raphael Tuju, is mourning the death of his mother, Mama Mary Odiyo Tuju.

Mama Mary passed away on the night of Wednesday, November 17, while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

She was aged 87 years.

In a condolence message, President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned the matriarch as highly respected community leader.

“Mama Mary was a known and highly respected community leader who believed in the virtues and benefits of education. Her belief that education was the foundation of life was the inspiration that led many from her community to pursue education, and become productive members of society,” the President stated.

The Head of State described Mama Mary as a strong matriach who raised a successful family and prayed to God to grant the Tuju family solace and fortitude at this difficult period of mourning.

“We will forever be grateful for the work she has done for our nation and for raising up a strong family which has continued to contribute to the socioeconomic transformation of our country.

“I pray that God will shed his love and peace in your hearts as you mourn the demise of your beloved mother.

"I assure you of my prayers and support as you come to terms with the death of your family matriarch,” President Kenyatta comforted the family.

This comes just weeks after Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney lost her elder sister Nancy Cheptoo Karoney who succumbed to cancer at the age of 54 years.

At the time of her death, Cheptoo was a retired teacher. She passed away one year after the painful death of her father Mzee Edward Kiprotich Karoney who died in a grisly road accident.

“It is very unfortunate and sad that Nancy has lost her fight with cancer at an age when your family needed her the most.

"It is even more painful that she has passed away, just one year after the sudden death of your father and family patriarch Mzee Edward Kiprotich," mourned President Uhuru at the time.
