The administration of a school in Homa Bay County has been put on the spot following the death of a student on Sunday, December 5.

This is after a form three student at Obera Boys High School collapsed when he was playing football.

According to witnesses, the student went to the ground after he was hit by the ball on the head, raising concerns among his colleagues.

The students tried to perform first aid on him before opting to rush him to the school administration block for him to be taken to hospital since he was unresponsive.

Having no school bus, the teachers resorted to looking for means to ferry the injured student to hospital. However, this would take time as vehicles were hard to come by.

Speaking to the Nation, area chief, Capis Olala, explained that the man who would have assisted the boy was not around

“I’m aware that the school had contracted a local resident who owns a car to be offering transport services during emergencies. Unfortunately, he was not near when he was called,” the administrator said.

The teachers managed to take the student to hospital.  However, it was too late; the student student was pronounced dead at the Samari Medical Centre.

The news of the student's demise caused unrest in the school. Police officers from the nearby station were called to restore calm after the students went on the rampage, destroying property within the institution.

The incident comes two years after a Grade One pupil at a school in Nairobi who passed away shortly after complaining of stomach pains during a physical education (P.E) lesson.

While appearing in court, the administration and the nurse of the school denied claims of negligence, arguing that they took the necessary procedures to help the pupil.
