Students at Maranda High School will be required to undergo a mandatory drug test before reporting to school.

According to a text message sent to parents and guardians by the school administration, all students should undergo a drug test before reporting to school on Monday, January 3, 2022.

The decision was reached upon following a meeting by the school's board of management on December 23, which resolved that students undergo tests in a  public facility or at the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drugs and Alcohol abuse (NACADA).

"All the students to undergo a mandatory drug and substance test while at home. This must be done in a public health facility or NACADA," the message read in part.

The students will be mandated to present certificates on an opening day. However, Maranda High School noted that the school would do a follow-up test on the same.

"Subsequently, there shall be a random testing conducted in and by the school," the message read in part.

In addition, all students will be subjected to pay Ksh5,125 in damages for the reconstruction of the dormitory that burnt down on December 5.

Parents will be required to pay the amount and the school fees in full before re-admission into the school. The school also announced that the students would report in batches.

For instance, specific Form One, Three and Four streams will report at 8 a.m on the re-opening date.

Maranda High School sent students home after the Boaz Owino dormitory was set ablaze.

The incident came just weeks after the school was closed indefinitely after a fire razed a dormitory housing 200 students on November 8, 2021.

A dormitory broke out on Sunday, December 5, at the Maranda High School.
