New details have emerged surrounding the death of a state prosecutor attached to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Kitui County.
According to police reports, Kevin Gesire was found dead in his apartment, with his house locked from inside and belt found around his neck.
Further, a suicide note was found next to his body which indicated that the State Counsel was struggling in life.
“He left a suicide note that said he was unhappy for not clinching a job as a magistrate during recent interviews at the Judiciary,” Gesire's colleague, Bonnie Okemwa, told the Nation.
Okemwa noted that before his colleague's demise, Gesire had spent the night out partying with friends until late at night.
However, on his way home, the deceased rammed into guard rails, which copiously damaged his car. Friends close to the deceased intimated that they had helped him tow the car to his house.
Kitui Central sub-county police Commander Chrispus Ogutu noted that preliminary investigations indicated that it was possible suicide.
"So far, we are treating this as a suicide based on our initial findings but a postmortem will be done before we conclude our investigations,” Ogutu informed the media.
Gesire's damaged car was towed to Kitui police station while his body was taken to Tribute Funeral Home in Syongila.
Suicide cases have been on the rise as many people have taken their lives due to various contentious issues. According to police data, more than 500 people committed suicide in the first six months of 2021, more than the total number in 2020.
Within the report, central Kenya recorded the highest number of suicide cases at 181. The Rift Valley region reported 68 cases, Nyanza followed with 67, Nairobi had 63, whereas the eastern region recorded 57 cases. The western region, the coastal region, northeastern regions recorded 29, 14 and 3 cases respectively.
