Members of Parliament have raised security concerns on the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway with elevated sections of the Jubilee administration project passing near the National Assembly.
According to Kitutu Masaba MP Shadrack Mose's submission to Parliament on Wednesday, February 2, he noted that the design of the 27km stretch poses serious security concerns to lawmakers.
The Legislator singled out the section between Haile Selassie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, and the intercontinental hotel where the road borders both the National Assembly and the Senate.
He further explained that at the moment, the contractors have not provided a detailed report how security in Parliament will be guaranteed ahead of the road's planned completion in March 2022.
The MP asked the relevant House committees in collaboration with law enforcement officers to give a statement within 21 days detailing how security of the Legislators will be guaranteed.
"In view of these concerns, considerable security arrangements ought to be accorded priority when executing infrastructural projects nears Parliament precinct.
"Whereas we are not opposed to the Nairobi Expressway given its huge economic potential to the country, I seek your intervention to invoke Standing Order 218 and direct the departmental head of national security and the departmental committee of public works to urgently inquire into the matter in order to verify the security arrangements if any that have into the design of the Nairobi Expressway," Mose stated.
His motion was seconded by Endebess MP, Robert Pukose, who suggested the construction of a perimeter wall around the area. He also suggested a full-time deployment of GSU officers once the road is completed.
"If possible, a perimeter wall can be put to make sure that the state of the security is guaranteed and even have GSU patrol or placed strategically within that way," Pukose stated.
Kitui Central MP, Benson Makali, also explained that the Nairobi Expressway poses serious security concerns to the National Assembly.
He expressed his fear that with the latest terror alerts issued by the French, German, and US governments, the issue must be taken seriously.
The construction of the Nairobi Expressway, which is valued at Ksh65 billion, is set to be finalised in March 2022. It is one of the infrastructure seen as President Uhuru Kenyatta's legacy project.
