Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya on Wednesday, February 9, dropped his Meru Gubernatorial aspirations amid wide expectation that he would be resigning from the Cabinet to contest in the August 9 General Election.

During a press conference at his Kilimo House office, Munya stated that he would continue to assist President Uhuru Kenyatta in implementing the government agenda in the Cabinet.

He also expressed his support for the Azimio Coalition which is supporting ODM Leader Raila Odinga as its presidential candidate in the upcoming polls.

Munya has also been taunted as a strong contender for the running mate position in the Odinga camp.

"I know there have been speculations regarding my state of vying for Meru Gubernatorial aspirations. I have been reflecting on my political journey and talking to my supporters and looking at the current situation and I have come to a conclusion that at this point in time, the best strategic decision I can make is not to vie for the position in the coming election," he stated.

He also noted that he would operate at a national level and build the PNU party in order to strengthen the party's relations in the Azimio la Umoja movement in order to win the 2022 General Election.

The CS added that he would support the candidate selected in the Azimio movement, noting that they would carry the vision of the country moving forward.

Agricultural Principal Secretary Hamadi Boga, on the other hand, resigned from the position in order to vie for the Kwale Gubernatorial seat. Munya vouched for the PS urging the Kwale residents to support her bid in the coming elections.

Initially the Meru Gubernatorial contest had attracted a supremacy battle between Munya and the incumbent County governor Kiraitu Murungi.

Their rivalry had emanated in the 2017 General Election when both contested for the seat. Further, the two had traded jabs in various rallies, with Munya poking holes at Murungi's track record.

The battle led to the Former premier intervening between the two in a bid to harmonise their relationship and produce a solid front under the Azimio movement.

"I have told them that there should not be any misunderstandings between them as my government will be large enough to accommodate all. One could be the governor while the other will be in the national government,” Raila stated.
