Nairobi Metropolitan Services boss, General Mohammed Badi has been summoned by the Senate over evictions within the county.
In a statement by the Senate on Thursday, February 17, it was revealed that Badi had been summoned to appear before Senators after a committee visited various estates that had experienced forced evictions around Eastleigh and Pumwani.
It was explained that Badi had failed to appear before the committee that was holding a sitting at Pumwani Boys High School. The Senate Committee of Devolution was led by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang'.
"The Senate Committee on Devolution chaired by Senator Moses Kajwang' summoned NMS boss Lt Gen Mohamed Badi and the chief officer lands to appear before the Senate after failing to appear before the committee.
“The committee also directed them to furnish the committee with the current survey plans, deep plans, and title deeds of the disputed parcels of land," read the statement.
At the center of the summons, are pieces of land that are alleged to have been given to a private developer who built various housing units on the land.
Speaking to the media after their visit to the area, Kajwang' stated that their preliminary investigations indicated that the land previously housed various staff members of the County.
“As the Senate, we are investigating circumstances under which land that belonged to Pumwani maternity that was housing doctors and nurses was transferred to private developers
“We have just come from Pumwani and we have seen that land that belonged to a police station is now a petrol station. We expect that we will be getting further directions from Badi,” Kajwang' expressed.
He explained that they received complaints from the residents adding that they would unravel what was happening.
“In June last year, the NMS came with a huge consignment of police, evicted the tenants, and demolished the houses. These are serious allegations and we shall be looking into them,” Kajwang' stated.
Additionally, Kajwang' also revealed that they would summon Governor Anne Kananu to explain why the county government had not taken action regarding the demolitions.
“We shall also call the governor and the relevant stakeholders to shed light on what is happening,” he disclosed.
