The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has embarked on a new project to give four estates within the city a facelift.
NMS led by Major Gen. Mohamed Badi announced on Friday, January 28, that the facelift will include renovations of the houses which are already old and dilapidated.
To give the estates the intended new look, Badi's administration will renovate and repaint the buildings to meet the required city standards for all structures and buildings.
So far, the renovations have been done on 760 units in Kariobangi South, Buruburu, Jamhuri, and Kariokor estates.
In Kariokor estate, the exercise was supervised by the area Member of County Assembly through the Ward Development Fund.
In the Financial Year 2021/2022, NMS begun a door-to-door operation informing the city residents of the planned renovations and facelift.
In Uhuru estate, the exercise will target 884 units while in the Outering estate 360 units will be targeted.
The house stocking exercise is set to run till December with the target being to cover over 16,700 housing units within the city.
"Service delivery has created over 100,000 Jobs. The construction of Grogan Road from Globe Roundabout to Kariokor has ensured ease of doing business in the area, directly and positively contributed to interventions of addressing the Street Families State of Affairs," Badi stated.
In January 2021, NMS announced plans to build affordable houses in the city targeting 10 estates.
The targeted estates included Bahati, Maringo, Jericho, Lumumba, Bondeni, Ziwani Embakasi, California, Kariobangi North, and Woodley Estate.
“This is the second phase of the Affordable Housing Delivery Program in Nairobi which aims at tackling urban decline, improving quality of the built environment, increasing housing stock, promoting optimal utilization of land, and improving the quality of social-economic life of the residents,” the notice stated.
The Park Road program was the first development under the Affordable Housing Program supported by NMS.
The integrated human settlement project is located in the Ngara estate. The houses include one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units going for Ksh1 million, Ksh2 million and Ksh3 million respectively.
