Murang'a Women Representative Sabina Chege is currently admitted to a hospital in Nairobi, County.

Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo on Tuesday, February 22, told the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) that his client was unwell and she was admitted to Nairobi Hospital.

According to the lawyer, Ms Chege was admitted on February 16, after she checked herself in the hospital. Amollo told the IEBC that she was still at the hospital after doctors ruled against discharging her.

Amollo presented a letter from Chege's doctor before the commission's Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee which indicated that the lawmaker was not in a position to be discharged from the hospital at the moment.

"The doctor addressed this letter at our request to confirm that the respondent is indisposed. She was admitted on February 16 and is currently undergoing treatment.

"In those circumstances, the respondent was not able to be with us. We did not get that letter to be addressed any earlier because being indisposed is not predictable as to when she would be in a position to be discharged or to attend," he stated.

MP Amollo further told the IEBC Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee that since they don't know when Ms Chege will be released from the hospital the committee should reschedule the hearing.

The electoral commission's Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee had summoned Chege to explain utterances she had made during a rally in Vihiga last week.

Her legal team, however, asked the IEBC to drop the matter arguing that the comments were taken out of context but the committee, after deliberations, found that the matter should be taken to a full hearing.

Speaking to the media after the summon, Senator James Orengo stated that the IEBC ignored grounds provided as to why the matter should not proceed before the committee.

"We raised five grounds as to why this matter should not proceed before the committee but they focused on 1 ground to make the decision they have jurisdiction. Utterances made by Sabina Chege don’t amount to the accusations made by the electoral commission," Orengo stated.

Chege was to answer over utterances made in a public rally in Isibuye in Vihiga County on 10th  February 2022.
