Over the years, St Peters Boys Mumias High School in Kakamega County has been famed for its vibrant journalism club.

Unknown to many, the school has produced some of the top journalists in the country. Some of the prolific journalists that attended the school include, former Citizen TV reporter and editor Alex Chamwada and Former KTN news anchor Louis Otieno.

Other prominent journalists from the institution include Manoah Esipisu, who served as a State House spokesperson, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) journalist Victor Muyakane and veteran Standard Group Editor Ted Malanda.

Apart from some of the accomplishments in the media industry, a section of the journalists have also received presidential awards for their noble work in the media industry and society.

During the Jamhuri Day celebrations in 2017, Muyakane was honoured by President Uhuru Kenyatta and was awarded a Head of State Commendation (HSC) for saving a man living with disability who was attacked by bees.

On the other hand, Chamwada, the founder and CEO of Chams Media, received the prestigious Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) award from retired President Mwai Kibaki in 2010.

St Peters was established in 1958 and is sponsored by the Catholic Church. Since its inception, the institution has posted remarkable results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Additionally, the school is considered unique due to its culture that is tailor-made to nature students to future leaders.

From its Italian school motto, mens sana in corpore sano- a sound mind to a sound body, the school also has rare traditions that are passed from one generation of students to another.

Upon admission to the school, students are expected to use cutlery during meal times. It is punishable to eat using bare hands at the institution regardless of the meal served.

The achievements of the school have been attributed to the school heads that have led the school over the years. In the recent past, Chamwada took to social media to congratulate his former Principal Ijait Aluku.

On January 6, the veteran journalist together with his former colleagues surprised the principal at a luncheon, congratulating him for shaping their career.

"He dared me to dare the world. And I have done it," Chamwada stated then.

Among other prominent people who went to St Peter's include, former Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Martin Oduor-Otieno and 2022 presidential aspirant Prof George Wajackoyah.
