Changamwe Member of Parliament, Shimbwa Omar Mwinyi, on Sunday, February 27, held a phone conversation with his daughter who is trying to flee the war-torn Ukraine.
In the call, the daughter, whose identity was withheld, disclosed that she had crossed from Ukraine to Poland but challenges were still plenty.
For instance, she was yet to have a meal and most of the hotels available in Poland were saved for Ukrainians and not foreigners from other countries.
"We already crossed the border and now we are in Poland. We cannot be admitted in their hotel because it is set for Ukranians. They are telling us to go to Warsaw, a town in Poland to get accommodation for foreigners.
"We are fine here. I have not yet eaten. I have just had snacks," the daughter told the father as quoted Citizen TV.
In another recording by the lawmaker, the daughter is heard saying that she had not eaten a proper meal for about three days and that most of the refugees had to walk for 25 kilometers to Poland for safety.
"We have not slept or eaten for about three days. We all walked 25 kilometers and we are all tired. The Mayor has given the directive that accommodation in the city is strictly for Ukrainians.
"They are giving the world this idea that they are helping refugees but when you get there, it is a totally different matter," she explained.
This comes a day after the President of the Kenyan Students Union in Russia and the Commonwealth Independent States (CIS), Harrison Talo, noted that at least two hundred Kenyan students living in Ukraine have safely fled to neighbouring Poland.
He further added that the students were received by Polish government and were safe.
"So far, 201 students were well-received in Poland and are safe. However, we still have some who are stuck, but we are in communication with them to help them find their way to the border," revealed the student leader.
The Kenyan students will be allowed to stay in Poland for 15 days.
