Angama Mara is one of the iconic lodges in Maasai Mara, renowned for its unique architectural design.

The lodge is managed by a mother and her daughter and charges north of Ksh 200,000 per night.

Nicky and Kate Fitzgerald are tasked with the operation of the award-winning lodge that stands 300 meters above the floor of Maasai Mara.

Kate's mother, Nicky who comes from South Africa officially launched the lodge in 2015 after spending four decades building numerous hotels, restaurants, and over 50 luxury safari lodges across Africa and other continents.

She graduated from the University of Cape Town in South Africa where she pursued English and History. After struggling to find a niche in her career, she decided to settle on hotel and accommodation.

She first co-founded Halcyon Hotels in South Africa’s Cape with her late husband, Steve Fitzgerald and rose to build an empire as they explored various parts of the world.

That was nearly 40 years ago, in 1982. This was an 11-roomed Arniston Hotel. She takes pride in having launched over 50 plus hotels and lodges with Angama Mara being a retirement venture.

Before settling in Kenya and launching Angama, Nicky established the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in Tanzania which she considered as one of her great achievements.

Angama Mara comprises two intimate camps each with 15 spacious and elegant tented suites. During peak seasons it charges up to Ksh245,315 per person per night but the price ranges vary depending on seasons.

The lodge run by a mother and daughter offers a number of world-class experiences including sunrise hot-air balloon safaris, nature walk on edge of the Great Rift Valley among others.

Angama Mara also offers mixed cuisine for both local and international visitors standing out among other Safari lodges in Maasai Mara.

Unfortunately, Nicky's husband succumbed to heart complications in October 2017. Her daughter, Kate, assumed the role of running the lodge alongside her mum.

The two have received a number of accolades in running Angama Safari lodge. In 2018, their lodge was feted by Condé Nast Traveler as the top resort in Africa.

In 2020, the mother and daughter were also honoured for their exemplary leadership with Angama Safari being featured in Travel and Leisure World's Best Awards and Fodor's Finest Hotels.
