The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has appointed Marjan Hussein as the Commission Secretary and the Chief Executive Officer.

The appointment was made on Wednesday, March 9, by the Commission Chairman, Wafula Chebukati.

Prior to his appointment, Marjan served in the acting capacity since the unceremonious exit of Ezra Chiloba in 2018.

IEBC had announced a vacancy in the position and received hundreds of applications but settled on Marjan whom it termed as the most suited candidate.

The electoral body advertised the position on Friday, December 24, and it stated that it was looking for a suitable candidate who can assume the role even as the country heads to the polls in less than nine months.

“Interviews for the position were conducted on 8th March 2022 and Hussein Marjan emerged as the most qualified and suitable for the position,” Chebukati said.

Marjan was the Deputy Commission Secretary support services, a position he had held since April 2015.

Chebukati stated that the commission has shortlisted 10 candidates for the vacant Deputy Commission Secretary position.

He added that the electoral Commission will conduct interviews for the Deputy Commission Secretary position on March 9, and on Thursday, March 10.

Among the key responsibilities that the new CEO will be tasked with is the coordination of activities at the secretariat as the commission prepares for the 2022 General Election.

“A key part of the responsibilities for this office is to ensure prudent management of the commission's resources, integrity and professional performance of all commission functions,” IEBC stated.

The electoral body added that interested candidates need to have five years of working experience in electoral matters, governance, management, law, finance or political science.
